Digital citizenship : The privacy policies
A Privacy Policy is a document that clearly and transparently describes how a website or app collects, uses, protects, and shares the personal data of its users.
When a person visits a website or downloads an app, they often provide personal information (such as name, email, browsing data, preferences). The Privacy Policy serves to inform the user about:
-
What data is collected
-
Why it is collected
-
How it is used
-
Whether it is shared with others
-
How it is protected

Why is it Important?
It is important because it protects the right to personal data protection, which is guaranteed by law. In Europe, for example, there is the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) which obliges those who manage websites and apps to clearly explain what they do with user data.
Personal data means any information that allows a person to be identified, even indirectly. Some examples:
-
First and last name
-
Email address
-
Phone number
-
IP address
-
Data on geographical location
-
Preferences and interests
What should a Privacy Policy contain?
The main elements are:
-
Types of data collected: for example, data provided by the user (newsletter subscription) or collected automatically (cookies, browsing history).
-
Purposes: explain why the data is collected (for example: to improve the service, send communications).
-
Processing methods: indicate how the data is stored and protected.
-
User rights: inform that each user can access, modify, or delete their data.
-
Contact information: provide an email or contact address to request information or exercise their rights.
Who should publish a Privacy Policy?
All websites and apps that collect personal data, even only through the use of cookies or contact forms. It does not matter whether it is a commercial or educational activity: if you collect data, you must inform users.
What happens if a Privacy Policy is missing?
Without a Privacy Policy, the person managing the website or app may be sanctioned by the data protection authorities (such as the Garante Privacy in Italy).
